Canada's Food Guide is an evidence-based resource that helps Canadians make informed choices about what to eat, where to eat, how to eat, and why it matters! Whether you're new to planning your own meals or just want to feel your best while navigating university life, Canada's Food Guide offers simple, practical advice that fits real-life student schedules.

At Dalhousie, students have the opportunity to put the Food Guide into practice. You'll notice plenty of plant-based proteins, whole grains, and colourful fruits and vegetables featured in our daily menus.

The Food Guide emphasizes:

  • Eating a variety of nutritious foods each day, with a focus on vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and protein-rich foods.
  • Choosing plant-based proteins more often, like beans, chickpeas, lentils, tofu, and seeds.
  • Making water your drink of choice to stay hydrated and reduce added sugar intake.
  • Cooking more often, which helps build food skills and confidence in the kitchen, even if you're just making your own snacks.
  • Being mindful of your eating habits, including listening to hunger cues, eating with others when possible, and reducing distractions during meals.

By using the Food Guide as a foundation, you can build habits that support your academic success, energy levels, and overall health & wellbeing. It's not about eating perfectly, it's about finding balance, enjoying your food, and making choices that work for you!
