How can I find out what is on the menu at the dining hall before I arrive?
During the school year, you can check what is being offered in each dining hall by clicking on the respective location and scrolling to the bottom of the page. Food locations at Dalhousie can be found HERE.
*Keep in mind, changes can be made from what is listed on our website, so be sure to check the menu signs posted in front of the dining halls for the most accurate representation of the menu.

What are the hours that the dining hall is open for meals and what can I get between meal times?
Dining hall is open for mealtimes during the following hours:
Breakfast: 7:00am - 10:00am
Continental breakfast: 10:00am - 11:30am
Lunch: 11:30am - 2:00pm
Condensed Afternoon Offerings: 2:00pm - 4:30pm
Dinner: 4:30pm - 9:00pm
*At Continental Breakfast there will be a selection of breads, cereals, fruit and yogurt. During the Condensed Afternoon Offerings the Salad and Deli Bar remain open and there will be a selection of items that can be ordered at the Grill Station.
*Snacks are provided in the dining hall at all times.
Am I able to check the nutritional content of the food I am eating in dining hall?
Yes! The nutritional content can be viewed on our website. There is a nutritional calculator available. The calculator is found under each menu item. Menu items can be found posted at each Dining Hall page. Food locations at Dalhousie can be found HERE.
Who should I speak with about managing a food intolerance or allergy in the dining hall?
If you are a residence student with a food allergy or intolerance, our Dietitian is here to support you in navigating our dining halls. For any medical dietary needs please reach out to our dietitian at dietitian@dal.ca
I’m not sure if I can eat the options available tonight in dining hall. Is there anyone I can talk to who might be able to tell me more about the food?
If you are unsure if the food meets your dietary requirements, you are able to ask a supervisor or manager for more details about the food. Look for the staff in the red shirts!
Our dietitian is also able to support you in adjusting to the dining halls, and is available for scheduled consults to discuss dietary needs. You can contact our dietitian for any non-immediate concerns at dietitian@dal.ca, to book a consultation.
I have a dietary restriction; how can I navigate the dining hall?
Our dining halls have menu icons meant to help you navigate your meal options as easily as possible. These menu icons can be found on menu items such as Vegan, No Gluten, No Dairy, Vegetarian, etc.
We ask that students with serious allergen concerns reach out to our dietitian at dietitian@dal.ca, to book a consultation. This is so that we are aware of your needs, and are able to help you navigate the dining hall as safely as possible.
Can I eat in the dining hall if I don’t live in residence?
Yes! We have off-campus meal plans available for anyone with a Dal ID. They can be purchased through the Dal Card office.
In addition, Howe, O'Brien, and Shirreff halls also have the option to pay at the door.
Single Entry Price:

Lunch- $16.26
Dinner- $18.44
Where can I get food with a meal plan while I’m on campus?
With a meal plan, you are able to dine at Howe Hall, Shirreff Hall, and O’Brien Hall. If you are a resident of Risley Hall, you are also able to dine there!
We also offer food at our retail locations in LSC, Killam Library, Tupper Medical Building, and more. Here you can’t use your meal plan, but you can use Foodbucks or regular payment to purchase food from any of our retail spaces.

Can I take food out of the dining hall?
The dining halls are designed as an all you care to eat dining in experience, so we ask that you kindly refrain from exiting the dining hall with meals.
You are permitted to take out small, singular items, such as: a cup of coffee or tea (in your own reusable mug); ice cream cones, toast, muffins, pieces of whole fruit, etc. These items are meant to be taken as a to-go snack, not a full meal, so please use your discretion when taking food with you.
What if I forget my card, or if it gets lost or stolen? Can I still eat at the dining hall?
Your Dal Card is required to use your meal plan at the dining hall. Please contact the Dal Card office if you have any issues with your card. Information on Dal card can be found HERE.
I have a suggestion for food I would like to see in the dining hall. Where can I communicate this to the dining hall staff?
To share your thoughts on the food, we have a program called Napkin Talk, where you are able to share your feedback with us. Simply write your feedback on any napkin and post to our corkboards located in our dining halls. Check back in with the corkboard - we will respond promptly!

Can I bring my bag inside the dining hall?
You can bring your bag, but we ask that as you enter the dining hall, you leave it in the cubbies available at the front behind the front desk area.
