Dalhousie Food Services has partnered with Fill it Forward to launch the Borrow Program in November 2025—a reusable cup initiative available at Frederic’s Café on the Sexton Campus
(B Building), and the first program of its kind in Canadian higher education.

The program allows you to borrow a 16 oz reusable travel mug, use it for your beverage, and return it when you’re done—just like borrowing a library book. Each mug features a unique ID sticker and QR code, making it easy to check out and return through the Fill it Forward app.

Download the app here to join and see the details.

Anyone who signs up using their Dalhousie email address will automatically be entered into the Dal Fill it Forward Community. You’ll be able to track your personal impact, join challenges, and see the collective difference our Dal community is making.

By choosing to borrow and reuse, you help reduce single-use cup waste and support sustainability projects around the world with every scan. It’s a simple, sustainable way to make a meaningful impact through everyday actions.

How it works

1.  Download the App here on your mobile device.

  1. 2. Pick up your Fill it Forward mug at Frederic's.

  1. 3. Scan the tag on your mug when you purchase your drink and show the cashier the green checkmark.

  1. 4. Enjoy your favorite beverage in your reusable travel mug - take it to class, work, or wherever your day takes you.

  1. 5. Drop your travel mug back when you're nearby or ready for another purchase by scanning the drop station when you return it.

  1. 6. Grab a fresh, clean travel mug and repeat the process.

This partnership reflects Dalhousie Food Services' ongoing commitment to sustainability. By encouraging reuse and reducing waste, we're working together to create a more environmentally conscious campus.
